VJ-1
From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.
VJ-1, or Vitamin Juice, is a highly addictive drug that also provided the name for a short-lived cable TV network in the 1980s.VJ-1, the drug
VJ-1, first synthesized by I Love Lucy's William Frawley after a night of frenzied sex with co-star Vivian Vance in 1953, is possibly the most addictive substance on the planet. "It takes only one drop to make a man a zombie!" charged Senator Joseph McCarthy. (McCarthy was immediately charged by his colleagues with McCarthyism and kicked out of the Senate; he later married lawyer Roy Cohn and had several children.)
Still, VJ-1 was not considered a public health hazard until 1977, when Marie Osmond went on live TV moments after drinking some VJ-spiked milk. In front of fifty million horrified viewers, Marie proceeded to strip naked and sing an off-key version of Debbie Boone's pop hit "You Light Up My Life". Clearly, something had to be done.
But it was too late. VJ had become so popular with America's young people that VJ Clubs were sprouting up all over the country, even as First Lady Rosslyn Carter advised (in a famous public service announcement), "Kids, don't do VJ...smoke dope instead!"
VJ-1, the network
After the runaway success of video music channel EmptyV in 1981, VJ-1 lent it name to a video music channel that proved to be short-lived...really short-lived. In fact, VJ-1 (the network) aired for only three minutes and nineteen seconds on the night of April 31, 1982; at 8:03:19 EST, an outraged viewer blew up the VJ-1 studio with a stick of dynamite after watching host Don Imus having frenzied sex with Vivian Vance. Many addicts of VJ-1 (the drug) immediately sworn off the substance. The VJ Clubs were disbanded, as many returned to heroin, scotch-and-coke, and Brooke Shields.
