The feel-good character designed to make both the TV network and the viewer feel as though they're truly experiencing "diversity" simply because someone with a lot of melanin has strolled across the screen.

The Token Ethnic Friend is beginning to recede as a show feature thanks to CBS, which has taken the radical step of casting as many as three non-Caucasians on a single television show. Now, the Token Ethnic Friend is being replaced by the Token Gay Associate.
