The Twilight Zone
From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.
In 1956, in his secret basement lab, Rod Serling created "irony", a mysterious black tar-like substance. For three years Serling looked ceaselessly for an application, when in the summer of 1959 he came across an in-production new show at CBS: The Twilight Zone. Serling got himself hired as the host, and before every episode he would sneak on set and liberally apply his new irony substance to the ending of the show, twisting it into a new meaning. The show was a hit for CBS, though throughout the show's five-year run they never knew exactly why.
Many years after its cancellation, The Twilight Zone would make a ghostly appearance on an even ghostlier network.
