Soap

From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.

Soap was the earliest known infomercial in television history. Starting in 1977, the Soap and Detergent Association began buying half-hour blocks of airtime on ABC to describe and sell their many personal hygiene products. Soap aired weekly from 1977 until 1981, when changes in FCC rules prevented infomercials from being broadcast in primetime.

Awards

Thanks to Soap, interest in hygiene increased greatly with some calling the late 1970's the "Golden Age of Cleanliness". As a result, Soap won a number of awards including several Emmys.
