Silver Spoons

From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.

Silver Spoons was a comedy series about a rich father, his young son, an adorable adopted urchin, and a hot space-fighter chick. It aired on NBC from September 25, 1982 to May 11, 1986 and in first-run syndication from September 15, 1986 to March 4, 1987.

Unlikely Premise

Edward Stratton III was a rich silverware magnate, who made a fortune selling various kinds of expensive silverware, including spoons made of sterling silver. However, he had never met his son, Ricky Stratton (Ricky Schroeder). But when Ricky's mother died of syphillis, the child moved in with his rich father.

Edward Stratton had problems of his own, including a business associate who embezzled millions from his toy company. However, Edward was a friendly, lovable guy, albeit one who acted like a big kid. He was kept on the straight and narrow by his personal assistant, played by Erin Gray, who had traded in her job as a spaceship pilot for the stability of babysitting a flighty silverware magnate.

Important Issues

Although a comedy, the series dealt with many serious issues in special episodes.

  • In one episode, Ricky's friend Alfonso is molested by a teacher, who commits suicide rather than face the shame of prosecution.
  • In another episode, Ricky confronts his dad when his obsession with prostitutes gets out of hand.
  • In a groundbreaking episode, Ricky has his first sexual experience with Blossom.
