Playmakers

From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.

Playmakers was a dramatic series about football players that aired on ESPN's all-Spanish channel, "ESPN Deportes". Aired in telenovela style, the show dealt realistically with the lives of football players and the people in their lives. This included storylines about steroid abuse, homosexuality, domestic abuse and more. These controversial storylines were ignored by ESPN, because none of their employees knew how to speak Spanish.

ESPN only learned of the controversy surrounding Playmakers while one of its hosts (probably Stuart Scott) was interviewing an 11-year-old shortstop playing for the Latin American team at the Little League World Series. After the young boy described the plot of Playmakers in detail, it became obvious that something had to be done. ESPN quickly flipped "ESPN Deportes" to its current ¡Todos Poker! format, sending Playmakers to the disabled list.

The producers of Playmakers are currently negotiating with executives at MY Network TV to bring a second season to the airwaves. Currently, the negotiations are said to be "not going too well".
