Carter Country

From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.

Carter Country was an ABC program broadcast from 1977 through 1979. Set in Washington, D.C., Carter Country starred Victor French as Edison Carter, a time traveller who accidentally set in motion a chain of events in which Harrison Ford never became President. Carter instead ends up in an alternate reality where an unknown Georgia peanut farmer named Billy Bob won the 1976 edition of Campaign! with his hypnotic brand of country music. With his time machine on the fritz, Carter must travel through the Deep South in search of spare parts, always on the run from the FCC for unknown reasons.

Despite only airing for two seasons, Carter Country became a cult favorite. Carter Country eventually spawned a 1980s sequel, In the Heat of the Night, in which Carter became a roving reporter warning America about the dangers of the Billy Bob Presidency.
