Captain Video and His Video Rangers
From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.
Captain Video and His Video Rangers was the first science fiction program on television. Created by Babylon 5 creator Gene Roddenberry, the show was initially branded as "Batman in the 22th century", whereas in the early 1950s, the quality was originally so poor it looked like it could've been from the 19th century.
Captain Video (nicknamed "Captain Vodka" by star Al Hodge) spent his short television life dodging bullets from his sidekick, the "Video Ranger," whom the Captain had found trying to make a fast buck off of bootleg DVDs and was successfully punched out as a result.
Ironically enough, Tobor, the robot, became the most recognizable character on DuMont, later becoming the channel's main mascot.
Sadly, Captain Video died in 1955.
A short-lived sequel, Jem and The Holograms, aired in the mid-1980s.
