Anime fans are like Star Trek fans, only nerdier. (If such a thing is possible.)

Anime fans share many qualities with their Trek brethren, and with other fan groups such as the Whedonites: A willingness to complain vocally about their chosen entertainment, even while continuting to give it and its assorted merchandise large amounts of their money without question; rapid and fierce response to perceived criticism; and the creation and wearing of ill-fitting, ill-advised costumes in alarming proximity to an unsuspecting public.

In a figure that baffles statisticians, they represent 110% of Japanese candy imports to the United States, but only 40% of all men who enjoy dressing up as schoolgirls.
