"I Am Not a Monkey!": The State v. John Scopes

"I Am Not a Monkey!": The State v. John Scopes was a four-hour mini-series that aired on the DuMont Network in 1925. It starred Clarence Darrow as John T. Scopes, a Tennessee lawyer who finds himself in the Kafka-esque situation of waking up one morning to find that he has transformed into a monkey. The authorities throw Scopes into a zoo, but Scopes challenges his detention in court. Scopes claims that he has devolved into a monkey, but the State argues that, since evolution doesn't exist, neither can devolution.

At the climax of the story, just as it appears that Scopes is about to prove that he is in fact a human and not a monkey, Scopes inexplicably starts throwing poo at the jury. The jury finds in favor of the State, and Scopes is sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars at the Nashville zoo.
